Winter Patterns

Report Date: February 8, 2008

Well these last two months have been somewhat spotty dew to the 2 cold fronts that have moved threw the Everglades.
We did have a moderate fish kill here in Chokoloskee but it wasn't nearly as bad as 12 years ago after Hurricane Andrew.
I would say the kill mostly effected the Sand Perch & Jew fish.
After about a week after the kill all seems to be back to normal.
As far as the Snook kill during these last 2 cold fronts Gil Drake and I probably only saw
probably only a couple dozen smaller snook in the 1 to 3 pound range.
During my last 1/2 dozen charters we did pretty well considering all that happen with these two fronts.
It wasn't easy since the water temp was in the low 60s,but just as soon as the water started to worm up the bite was back on.
The problem was trying to find the fish.
We worked hard, but managed to put the pieces together and finially were able to take advantage of the knowledge we learned.
The larger snook were in a coma, but the 2 to 5 pounders were ready to eat,and they did.
I did manage 1 about 15 pounds, and 1 that got away in the 20 pound range.
There are still quiet a few Reds out back, and the were eating also.
On the gulf side, the Spanish are here in numbers,Trout are somewhat hard to find ,but once you find them,it's 1 after another.
The Blue Crabers are setting their traps now,
and i'm looking forward to flyFishing the Tripletails on the float balls once they get some growth on them.
So In Ending:
Snook are back and eating,Blues,Mackeral and trout are in abundance on the gulf side, and the Tarpon are still in their southern migration on the gulf side.
Tight lines,
Capt Bert Barkus
Chokoloskee @ Everglades National park.
